Navigation outline titles not displaying slide titles on web pages

Please go to http://1.gdpkeyboarding.com/PowerPoint/orientproofcheck.htm and
notice titles in the navigation Outline pane. When I open this presentation
in PowerPoint 2007 as a *.ppt file and look at the slide titles in the
Outline tab, they show the correct titles. For example the first slide is
titled "Orientation to Proofreading Checks" and that is the title that should
be displaying in the navigation Outline pane on the web. However, you can see
that instead, the title for the first slide is blank and the remaining titles
seem to show random lines from some bulleted lists I have in each slide.

I thought that the titles in the navigation list are generated from the
title placeholders you see in the *.ppt view under the Outline tab? What am I
doing wrong and is there a way to identify the text I want PowerPoint 2007 to
use for titles in the navigation list when the presentation is saved as a Web
page? Thanks in advance.

Your correct when you say that text placed in the titles place holder will
appear in your outline on your web page. They will also appear in your
outline view when your editing in PowerPoint If you were to put
"Orientation to Proofreading Checks" into a Title Placeholder it would show
up in your Outline. Looks like you placed it into a text box.

I went through you presentation and put all the titles into Title Place
Holders and everything showed up where it was supposed to both in PowerPoint
and as HTML.

Thanks for all that work, Michael! Can you please tell me how to insert a
title placeholder and how to know whether an existing box is a textbox or
title placeholder in PP 2007?

On the Home Tab, click on the little down arrow on the New Slide button you
should receive a dropdown menu displaying all the available slide types for
your presentation. To check and see if your in a Title Place holder. Select
the text, Press Ctrl+C to copy it into memory, then delete it In it's place
you should see "Click to Add Title" if it is a valid Title place holder.

To add a placeholder to a layout, do the following:

1. On the View tab, in the Presentation Views group, click Slide Master.
2. On the Slide Master tab, in the Edit Master group, click Insert Layout.
3. On the Slide Master tab, in the Master Layout group, click the arrow next
to Insert Placeholder, and then click the type of placeholder that you want.
4. Click a location on the layout, and then drag to draw the placeholder.
To add more placeholders to a layout, repeat steps 2 through 4.

But, I went back and checked your presentation again, and now for some
unknown reason I get the same results as you.

I deleted what I thought was a Title Place holder and I didn't get the "Click
to Add Title" so it must be a text box. If it is a textbox, I don't know why
it is showing up in
my outline tab.

When I followed your steps and got to this step (3. On the Slide Master tab,
in the Master Layout group, click the arrow next to Insert Placeholder, and
then click the type of placeholder that you want.) A placeholder for a title
is not on the list. So I'm still not able to insert a placeholder. FYI--this
presentation began as a PP 2003 show and I opened it in PP 2007 and saved it
as a 2003 show. Maybe that is contributing to this issue.

When your in the Master view, there is a checkmark for Title Slide.

Normally when you showing/viewing a presentation it is in the Slideshow mode
in PowerPoint, and Full Screen mode on the web site, and the Outline does
not come into play. I know there are some problems with 2007/2003
conversions hopefully they will be rectified in the first service patch. You

Hi Arlene,

Can you explain the exact "provenance" of this file? Ie, what version of PPT
was it created in and exported to HTML from?

I ask because when I open the HTML from your site into PPT 2003, there's nothing
whatever in the Outline. All the text has been converted to pictures.

I'm guessing that you created the presentation in 2007 then.

Did you save it in compatibility mode or edit in 2003/earlier versions at any
point?

I finally figured out an easy way to add a title box. From the Home tab,
Slides group, click the list arrow next to Layout. From the drop-down list of
slides, click Title Only. That will insert a title box into the current
slide. You can then type or copy/paste what you want to appear in the title
box. This adds the title in Outline view and displays the title in a browser
in the navigation pane.
