Flatbed Slide Scanner Won't Work/Canoscan

I just brought home a Canoscan 5200f which is a higher res flatbed
scanner which is also supposed to do slides. You remove/slide a white
plastic sheet out of the lid of the scanner which reveals another
white sheet with a slit in it and a piece of glass in the slit. You
position your slides on a rack on the scanner itself which aligns
itself under the soon to be backlit slit, and then close the lid and
hopefully scan. I tried several times and couldn't even get a preview,
instead these error messages, none of which seem to apply: original
slides not set properly, or, lamp not warmed up enough- may take
several minutes, or unit not plugged in properly. (I doubt the backlit
slit is even being lit up in the first place.)

I originally tested the unit with a basic, regular colour picture
scan, and it worked ok, but it just refuses the slides. The slides I'm
using are from the 70's, but they look like the standard size. I've
tried resetting the slides in the rack in various positions, but this
doesn't work either. The machine tries to scan for a few seconds, then
nothing. The only other thing I can think of is that I get a little
note from xp saying that if I used a high speed USB port (I don't have
any), the scan process would go faster. Though the regular picture
scan I did when I first operated the scanner was not slow at all.
Anyone else encounter this with flatbeds with the slide scanner
option?

Thanks for any input

Does the Canoscan 5200f have a wire coming out of the lid for the
transparency light? Is the wire plugged in, is the plug making good contact?
(wiggle it) Check for bent pins. Does the lid have a separate power supply?
Is it plugged in?

Turn off, then on the scanner with the TPA connected, Reboot computer.
Select transparency or negative in the driver software. If the selection is
not available the TPA is not plugged in.

I recently acquired this scanner and I have been getting in excellent
results, I did install a usb 2.0 adapter, they are really reasonably price
! Have you checked out csmi post ?

"Soon to be backlit"? As opposed to "backlit"? Even with the source
set to something other than "platen"?

I have the same scanner: if the slit isn't backlit with the lid open
when you've set "monochrome negative" (or whatever) as your source,
then I suspect the connection between the lid and the back of the
scanner is faulty (there's a lead running from the lid that you have
to plug in to the back of the scanner - it powers the lamp in the lid).
Making sure the lid's connected is the first thing I'd do.

Second thing I'd try: turn on the scanner, then reboot your PC.

Oh, and I'm running mine on a USB1.1 connection too - it still works
fine, it's just a bit slower.

Regards
Chris
