"Flashconfigcreatenetwork" and DLL Error

Ed Kemper

I'm working on a friend's computer and am getting a"Flashconfigcreatenetwork"
error message whenever I try to set up a wireless connection. He tried to
install Service Pack 2, but it locked up during the process and afterward all
he could see on bootup (which took many, many minutes) was a desktop with no
way to interact with it. I did a repair installation of Windows XP (with SP1)
and we were able to get to the desktop and actually do stuff, but according to
him it's taking at least twice as long to get there as it did before all his
problems started. Also, the system seems to be running much slower than it did
before once we do to the Desktop.

He's using a NetGear router and we can see it make a connection with
the master computer connected the Internet, but Explorer says there is
no connection. When we try to use the Wireless Connection Wizard, we
get the Wireless Network Setup Wizard "RUNDLL error - Error in
wzcdlg.dll Missing entry: FlashConfigCreateNetwork" message.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this resolved?

Thanx!

When you did your XP repair install did you also re-install the drivers
for your wireless device?

Given that your friend seems to think that there is a performance
problem after the repair install I would be tempted to format and do a
clean install.

Yes, I re-installed the drivers for the Netgear Router. It has a Configuration
Utility, and it says we are making a connection with the master computer (or
some other wireless network in the vicinity possibly). The funny thing about
the Netgear driver installation was that it prompted us to disable some
built-in Windows wireless configuration service. Thinking that might have been
the source of the problem, I disabled the Netgear Configuration Utility from
launching on startup (thru MSCONFIG) but we still get the same error message
even when it's not loaded. If we're connecting to the master computer, could
the issue be in the TCP/IP settings? I don't think we even touched those.

Turns out he hasn't de-fragged the drive in at least a year. No telling what
happened when he had to power down manually during the Service Pack 2
installation, so I'm having him doing a disk cleanup and then a defrag to see
if that speeds things up at all.

Thanks for your help!

I find this confusing, possibly terminology.
"drivers for the Netgear Router" Routers tend to do their on processing
and do not need drivers installing on the computer. What is his network?
If he is using a wireless card or a USB wireless adapter then I can
understand drivers on the computer. When you disabled the netgear config
utility did you tell the device to use the "windows zero config"
utility, if not then there is a good chance it was not started and
therefore would not control the device.Check in
Control Panel-->Administrative Tools-->Services to see if it had started.
Some wireless devices require the correct driver for the OS in use e.g
Netgear MA111 ver1 had an problem with XP SP2 unless the ver2.5 drivers
were used so it is worthwhile checking the version of driver used.

Run these two commands from a command prompt. Just do the first one if you
only have SP1 installed.

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

netsh winsock reset

You're right, I used the wrong terminology. My friend is using a wireless
USB adapter to connect to a wireless router hooked up to a Mac.

I told him to check the Wireless Zero Config service, and it WAS activated when
the Netgear Configuration Utility was not being loaded on startup.

He gets the error message I described when he tries to use the Wireless
Network Configuration Wizard.

I'm really stumped.

Which Netgear USB adapter was he using?was it a MA111?

Yes, it is a MA111. He is currently running Windows XP SP1 (per the reinstall
I mentioned earlier).
