Flash Drive appears to crash Vista!

Hi,

I recently bought a new PC and with it an upgrade from XP to Vista. Problem
is that the USB flash drive that I use seems to crash the windows explorer! I
power up my PC, connect the drive. Windows explorer opens then comes up with
a message that "It is not responding".

I have once managed to view the pictures on my stick on this PC and it works
perfectly well on other PCs. I sometimes ( after a long wait ) can see the
folders on the flash drive but when i enter the folders blamo, explorer stops
responding.

Please help as i am a novice and this is REALLY frustrating me.

Im running a Vista Upgrade to home premium from XP in 32 bit mode.

In Device manager the Disk Drives comes up with "Multi Flash Reader USB
Device" and the Portable Devices comes up with "Microsoft WPD FileSystem
Volume Driver". Both appear to show no errors and the drivers are up to date.

Help!!

Joker,

I'm not sure what you mean when saying the drivers are up to date. Have you
downloaded and installed all the updates available at the Microsoft Vista
update site? If not, try doing that with the USB device connected (before
crash). Sometimes you can get a fix by that method. Just something to
consider, if you haven't already done that.

Thanks Freddy,

I have updated windows using the "Windows Update" funcytionality choosing
all the optional downloads as well as the critical ones. When i try to update
the "Multi Flash Reader USB Device" and the "Microsoft WPD FileSystem Volume
Driver" drivers I choose to look in the system32 directory ( and sub
folders). Windows says my drivers are up to date. I have tried uninstalling
the devices and powering up with the usb drive plugged in too.

I can see the drive in windows explorer just not access it. I tried mapping
the drive to another letter via manager but that didn' work either.

Nothing seems to work with it im afraid Its a bit of a mystery.

Thanks again for the quick reply and the suggestion. I'll try anything short
of Voodoo to get it to work! 8o)

If i can supply any more information that will help just ask.

Joker,

Though I can't be certain, I suspect the WPD file system is the cause of the
problem with Vista. Is this file system some sort of an application that's
installed on the flash card or is it simply the way the card is partitioned
and formatted? If it's something you don't really need and something you can
remove by reformatting the drive, try doing that. If this approach appeals
to you, try formatting the drive in FAT 32. That's all I can think of.
Perhaps someone else has a better explanation.
