Flakey USB 2.0 PCI cards

I bought 2 CompUSA PCI/USB 2.0 cards [ALI Chipset] on sale. Both installed
fine under Windows XP Sp2 [one in a Sony Vaio and the other a Compaq
DeskPro]. Worked OK for a few weeks. Now neither reliably recognizes
devices which appear fine in the USB 1.1 ports. Doing an uninstall of all
USB devices from Safe Mode did not help.
I'm perplexed.
I have no desire to spend overspend on a name brand card but suspect the
cards themselves.
Any comments or sloutions?
Thank you.

Sorry, no solutions, but because two of these cards won't work on separate
systems does rather point to defective cards. You must be able to swap them
for replacements if they're only a few weeks old. Maybe they're part of a
bad batch.

Windowx XP has a big problem being able to reliably deal with USB2 devices.
I've seen it happen so many times where things worked for a while and then
later ceased to work. The only thing I can suggest is to force Windows to
renumerate the USB2 devices. Remove that PCI card and restart Windows. Then
after it goes through the process, turn off your 'puter and reinstall the
PCI card so that Windows "rediscovers" it and sets up the drivers once
more. This *should* get it working for a while again until the next time
Windows pukes.

If you choose to get replacement cards, investigate the chipmaker onboard
the card. Look for Via, TI, or Oxford.
