Flag icon on email disappeared

In using Outlook (Office XP , version 2002) and trying to flag messages for
followup, I now get text messages ('followup ....) instead. Is there a
switch or an option to change this back to flags?
 
Right click on the row of field names and choose format columns. You have
the format set as text, not bitmap (icon). Choosing customize and then
resetting the view should fix it as well.
