FIZMO Question/Move

G

Geokin

We are moving the DC (DC1) that has the fizmo roles. I set
up a new dc (DC2)as a global catalog. IS it safe to shut
down DC1 and move? (this will take a few days before the
server is back on line (DC1))

Do I have to remove the Global Catalog role from DC1 so
there is no conflect with the Infrastructure master when
DC1 comes back on line?

TIA

Typically, if you have more than one DC you should configure a DC that
does -not- hold the Infrastructure Master role to be a Global Catalog.
Otherwise cross-domain object references in that domain are not updated, and
a warning to that effect is entered in that DC's event log. (If you only
have one domain in play, this is obviously somewhat moot.)

If you will be physically moving the server that houses your FSMO roles and
it will be offline for any amount of time, you should transfer the PDC
Emulator role to the remaining DC. The PDC Emulator is necessary for any
downlevel clients to log on, and aids in password synchronization.

So since I added a DC, does that mean that I should remove
the global catalog role from the DC that is moving? Then
re add it once the server is back up? The second DC is
only temp for the move.
Thanks

I wouldn't bother removing it, no. There's no real harm in having multiple
GCs installed on a network, and if the 2nd DC is only going to be available
temporarily then you might as well leave the first one configured as a GC.
