FIXMBR

My computer wont load, so i went and ran chkdsk /r. It
finally worked, but i tried restart, to see if the
problem was fix, and it froze. I was getting a blue
screen with "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME", after chkdsk i
didnt get that anymore, but it just freezes at a black
screen. I am running chkdsk for a 2nd time, just to get
it up (hopefully) so ican put files on disk, that are
important. I read about FIXMBR and fixboot. I am
wondeirng, if i was to run those in Recovery Console,
would it damage my HD as in deleting files, or would it
just fix it? Also, is there any other problems that can
arise because of fixboot or FIXMBR.

(I am not posting using that computer).

Who knows. Reinstall XP and don't use chkdsk. Fixmbr won't help (unless you are using a linux multiboot program).

Try a repair install of xp:
Boot from the XP cd, and when prompted hit enter to begin setup. Press F8 to
accept the license agreement. It will then search and find your existing XP
install. Select it, and choose R for repair. Back up any important data
files in case something goes wrong(if you can).

First question is this on WindowsXP and is it an upgrade
version or fresh install . I had problems before with an
upgrade to XP and did a fixmbr but found out i screwed
myself because I was in FAT32 and not NTFS..

Also you may want to reinstall XP and use it as is and
only use FIXMBR with multiboot scenerio.

More than you probably want to know about the MBR:

Who knows. Reinstall XP and don't use chkdsk.

We don't know, but we can guess that this...

1) PC won't start
2) User does ChkDsk /r
3) This locks up?
4) Now PC won't start at all

....means the HD is dying, i.e. has bad sectors that ChkDsk /r fell
into and crawl back out of.

If that's the case, "reinstalling XP" is likely to be disasterous
advice; not only is it likely to fail to recreate a working
installation, but it's likely to irreversably botch whatever data is
on the HD. First priority here may well be data recovery!

Also... Look on the hard drive manufacturers site to see if they have
diagnostics tools available. Most do, and it makes it much easier to
get a drive RMA'd if under warranty after you run their tools and it
tells you the drive is toast
