OK I wrote about this long ago and have even had emails to people who
guessed my address and want a solution... so I just want to write the
solution here so people can get it on google more easily:

It you buy a brand spaking new Sony Laptop running Vista and set the
start menu to classic mode and leave the security settings on and try
to drag and drop an icon on the start menu to a different location you
are likely to see the error message "Windows Explorer has stopped
working". If you look in google you are likely to see thousands of
posts about it and start pulling out your hair. I solved it a long
time ago but bought another sony laptop at the weekend and its still
got the same problem.

The thread that explains how to fix it it is here:

http://club.vaio.sony.co.uk/clubvaio/GB/en/forum/viewthread?thread=40902

The cause is in all the junk software that Sony ship with their vista
laptops something is causing this crash -although I have never been
able to figure out what. Blame Sony for shipping rubbish software,
blame the software world at large for building rubbish software, and
blame microsoft for a horrible product.

so does this apply to the thousands of other type's of computers that have
the same problem i myself have a compaq laptop that has suffered the same
problem but it wasn't caused in the way you described it was incompatible
software which reading through some of the posts in this forum is the primary
cause and as yet there is no solution other than clean install
