FIX for ethernet loss of connections

The cable company came out and couldn't get my win laptop connected to the
internet via ethernet cable. They had to run a WinSock DNS repair thing on
my system to get it to work. That apparently has been my problem for a while
- perhaps since installing Norton Internet Security???

What does this kind of corruption in the deep system mean and is there a
shareware version of the program I might get?

It was probably caused by NIS. There are various freeware tools to fix the
Winsock catalog, there is also this KB
