ethernet card not working; connection thru usb

I am currently getting my internet connection from a Thomson Cable modem thru
a usb...it seems as if the ethernet card/port does not work/exists/etc., as a
standard cable from the modem to the laptop does nothing...unless there is a
usb adapter for a router, I can't get a wireless connection....so what can I
do to check/repair the ethernet card in order to then use the cable from the
modem into the router in order to go wireless...

I don't mind having the connection, but being chained to the damn modem irks
me...why does my laptop read the usb port connection, and not the standard
ethernet cable?

Does the Ethernet port (local area network connection) appear in the
Network Connections folder? If so, make sure that it's enabled.

If it doesn't, go to Device Manager and see if it appears under
Network Adapters. If it does, is there an exclamation point on it,
which denotes problems? If it doesn't, click Action | "Scan for
hardware changes" to install it.

If that doesn't help, make sure that the Ethernet port is enabled in
the computer's BIOS setup.
