Fix? - Driver issues with Call of Duty, Trillian and 9800 Pro

Hey all. I just wanted to post a `fix' for anyone else that may be
having problems with gamma/brightness issues in some games.

Even after installing the 4.4's and the Hotfix from ATI as well as
trying the Omega drivers I still had an issue where the brightness
levels in some games (Call of Duty, Deus Ex - Invisible War, etc.) was
WAY dark and even if you adjusted the sliders the setting wouldn't
`stick' the next time you started the game.

Well after working with Activision I discovered that an I.M. program I
run called Trillian Pro resides `docked' on my desktop. If I minimize
the program to the System Tray before starting any such game, there is
no gamma/brightness issue.

Anyhow I've emailed ATI at their Catalyst feedback page to see if
there is some driver issue they need to look at with the newer Cat's
to see about a fix. Until then if you have a similar issue, try
making sure there are no programs that may be running on the desktop,
so to speak.

For me it was a case of the brightness being messed up until you attempt to
adjust the brightness slider, at which point it would revert to the original
setting.

It seems to be an issue with transparency and it's not just in CoD. Also,
if Trillian is minimised, but produces windows that popup which have
transparency the issue is still prevalent.

busy fragging!

Okay, again...

CHAT PROGRAMS AND GAMES DON"T GO TOGETHER!!!!!!!

Well you all heard it this time? I mean truly you don't need MSN on
while gaming because your Breezahchicky might log on.. she hasn't
anything interresting to say anyway!

Sometimes they do go together. For instance a friend and I (him at his
house, me at mine) will start up an MSN Messenger voice chat session and
then go and do some on-line gaming. It lets us BS or even help each other
out as if we were in the same room.

That's true. I noticed that if a `xxx has logged on' window poped up,
the same thing happened. Transparency issue. Thanks for putting a
name with this, I had no idea what to call it (or search for).

No problem, just mentioning my observations... it might not be
transparency, it might just be Triliian, but that seems the most likely
cause. If anybody else out there can make a transparent window appear
whilst gaming, we might be able to back it up a bit.
