I am running XP Pro SP2 and inadvertently disabled my firewall and then got
hit with malware / adware from firstadsolution. I continually loads ad
pop-ups even with IE not running. I have run ad & spy ware programs and
installed windows defender but nothing seems to find it or list it as a
possible malware. Can not find any removal software. I need help to remove
it. I do not want to have to restore the PC back to as bought condition but
trying to "restore" the PC to an earlier date does not work.

Thanks,
Tom

I have not dealt with that one but be sure to use the latest definitions for
whatever program you are scanning with. I have had good luck with AdAware
SE. Also try booting into Safe Mode to do your spyware scans. You also might
want to try the newest version of Autoruns from SysInternals/Microsoft that
shows a plethora of info on startup/logon processes, IE related items, and
gives you the ability to disable them.

If you are using cable or DSL for your internet connection your REALLY
should be using an "internet router" or firewall device as the first line of
defense for your network. Internet routers are dirt cheap and will protect
you from uninitiated inbound access even if your host firewall becomes
disabled.
