First Windows 7 beta puts fresh face on Vista

For those running Vista but want less annoyance and more reliability in driver
compatibility, etc - good read here.
Seems MS has done a good job, so far...

True, yes - but, you must be a subscriber to TechNet and/or MSDN to fetch this.

However, it will also be available to the first 2.5 million downloaders on
Friday--public beta.

Thanks, Bill - we all know how fast those will disappear <w>
Folks will be waiting at their keyboards with bated breath, then poof, no more until
the next Public Beta.

I wonder if this will install on Virtual PC - the earlier preview of
Windows 7 did not.

Some MS MVP's are now experimenting with running Win 7 in VPC as I type, Pat.
Will post back, when I know more.

Best,

I was in the virtual pc newsgroup and someone said they got it to install
I am thinking of trying it this way or putting in another hd on my computer
and testing it that way
I also saw a post that it is having a problem with installing on amd
processor machines and this was the one I wanted to put it on
robin

R

when you know more, please ask if if any of them tried putting it on virtual
pc using an amd processor or a separate hd using an amd processor

I've seen a note in another forum stating that this can be done. It can be
done on VMWare as well.

after the knowledge I received from a good many posters in the newsgroup on
virtual pc
you need to have at least 3gigs of memory either on vista or xp pro sp3.
You need at least 1gig to run Windows 7 and at least 2 for the rest of vista
I told them I only have one gig on my vista test machine and they said that
is not enough.
For xp pro sp3 you can run it with 2gigs but 3 would be better since it will
pull some of the 2gigs. The xp pro machine only can hold up to 2 gigs so
that one is out.
since I am not going out to purchase 2 more gigs of ram for this vista
machine just to run windows 7 I am going to put another sata hd on this
machine, unplug vista hd and install a 80gig sata which I have already and
burn the iso to a dvd and run it from there.
When I need vista back I will just unplug the windows 7 one
This way if I get real frustrated or something goes wrong all I have to do
is wipe the disk and reformat it.

I am not sure if I am going to do this in the first release of windows 7 or
the second.

The plan was to make it available starting at noon pacific time. The
Microsoft spokesperson quoted said "today" as part of the statement. I
doubt this will be a lengthy delay.

Direct download links posted various places are functional.

well sorta, if you want wait 10hrs of downloading time and I am on broadband
I just downloaded a 1gig file somewhere else and that took 20min
on microsoft site for the 2gig windows 7 file it is saying it will take
10hrs.
a bit slow eh?
forget this I will wait for beta 2

I don't have a technet account, but I find that I am logged into that forum
with the live ID I used when I got keys for the beta.

The FAQ for Windows 7 is important to read. Lots of details in there.

Each key is good for 3 machines, and is associated with your Live ID--so you
can find it again by just signing into the download site again (if that is
ever possible!)

well I got it!! finally- today- key and all
I already burned it as a bootable iso dvd disk
now I have to wait for my husband to open this computer and see if it
actually has a sata drive in it because I plan to put another one in to run
windows 7 and unhook the main drive that has vista on it so I do not mess up
vista. Someone said it is easy just to unplug and replug each drive when I
want to run either one. I have 2 sata hds with 80gigs and I am running 1gig
of memory on this computer now- you need a gig to run windows 7. unless I
find memory cheap for this computer (2more gigs) I will have to do it this
way. I wanted to do it virtually but I need 3gigs on this vista to do it.
time will tell
