After installing Windows XP Pro, SP2 & updated Antivirus, and before

(from CD / Disk on Key) to protect the computer ?

As long as you have a firewall active - the Windows Firewall from SP2 or
one that comes with your antivirus - and your antivirus installed,
you're good to go. If you have a broadband connection, it's also a good
idea to install a consumer-level router (Linksys, Netgear, etc.) even
if you only have one computer. But you don't need to do this just to
get started.

To add a little to what Malke said...
Install the updates right away.
Do NOT do any surfing Email etc until all Critical Updates and Service Packs
are installed.
Also install and update your antivirus before surfing, Email etc.
