First AD DC dead

Dunc

Hi,

Our first DC in our Active Directory domain has failed.
I had previously transferred all the roles (RID, PDC, Schema,
etc.etc.) to another DC so we have no issues there.

A new disk will arrive tomorrow - is there any particular way I need
to rebuild this first DC or can I just install AD then transfer all
the roles back to it?

Thanks!

Use the following article to remove the dead dc completely out of the domain
and then install the os on the server and promote it up as a dc. You can use
the same name or change it.

Here are the steps necessary to rebuild this machine.

1. First perform a metadata cleanup using the steps outlined in KB article
216498: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;216498 on
one of the remaining good DCs.
2. Ensure that the metadata cleanup replicates out to all other DCs.
3. At this point you can rebuild the machine, rejoin it to the domain and
promote it back up to a DC. It is not recommended that you use the same
name though.
4. Transfer desired FSMO roles back to the rebuilt machine.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help people.

I actually managed to get the server to stay up long enough in order
to properly remove AD via DCPROMO, so a simple re-installation of AD
should be OK now, yes?

Thanks.

That is correct.
