Firewire Drive & XP

I have the ADS Firewire kit & card using a Western Digtial 120gig drive and
I'm having problems getting it connected. I have all the correct drivers and
the Firewire card, but when I activate it on my PC the green light on the
firewire case goes on the off repeatly. I then shut it off and turn it on
and sometimes it's ok but other times the green light goes on and off again.
I've tried different firewire cables with no success and the tip about going
to Disk Management and choosing the edit the Drive Letter and then cancel
with no success. I've read other posts about Firewire problems and I believe
it might be something with the Services. Does anybody have any ideas on what
I'm doing wrong or what maybe the problem?

Here are some specs:
Windows XP Pro.
Asus P3VFX
Intel P3 800Mhz
256MB ram
120 Western Digital Hardrive - Master
120 Western Digital Hardrive - Slave
ADS Firewire Card & Kit using a 120 Western Digital Hardrive.

I use a Firewire Ext. HD with XP and have no problems. If that
happened to me, I'd first unplug the Firewire cable, turn on the
Firewire drive and see if the it blinks on and off repeatedly without
even being plugged into the computer. My hunch is it could be a
defective drive, perhaps. If the blinking persists, despite being
unplugged from the computer, it's not XP or your computer.

I don't quite understand what you mean by "activating it" but assume you
mean when you "hot connect" the drive to the machine it is sometimes
recognized and sometimes not. If that is what you mean I have similar
problems with a usb/firewire drive and a Toshiba Satellite laptop when using
firewire to connect the drive. I have no problem when using a Belkin self
powered USB cardbus to connect the drive.

In my case I think the problem may be due to an "inadequate" power supply to
the enclosure. I think my drive enclosure is very sensitive to the power
supply as I have found that generally I have no problem if I provide the
power to the card from a USB port when using firewire. In my case the drive
will not be recognized if I plug it into a self powered Belkin USB four port
hub that other devices (scanner, printer, mouse) all operate from without
problems. When I do have problems when the drive is powered directly from a
port, the drive will be recognized when I restart the machine with the drive
fully connected.

I've turned on the Firewire drive without the firewire cable plugged in and
the green light still keeps going on and off. I've also tried different
outlets with no success. So my guess is now that the drive kit is defective.
Hopefully, I'll get an RMA and get a brand new drive kit. When I say
"activating it" I mean turning the power on the Drive kit.
