firewalls-zone alarm or sygate or???

Have XP running smoothly, don't want to cause probs.
Which firewall would you recommend??

I've been happy with symantec Norton Internet Security
2003 firewall, pop up blocking, spam, Intrusion detection,
Virus protection all in one. Get cheap at pricegrabber.

I have used several in the past. I believe Zone alarm Pro is by far the best
in all areas, but in particular, its user interface.

When my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton Internet
Security 2002 came up for renewal (at a cost substantially higher than
last year's subscription), I decided to try less expensive solutions.
I downloaded and installed the free version of GriSoft's AVG (
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ) and the free version of
Sygate's Personal Firewall ( http://smb.sygate.com/free/default.php ).
Both have proven to be easily installed, easy to use, and quite
effective. Additionally, I was pleasantly surprised to see a small
but very noticeable improvement in my PC's performance, once I'd
replaced the Symantec product.

I'll second this. I've used it for a long time. There is a recent update,

I agree, Sygate is an excellent product.

Software firewalls are poor at best... They take CPU time to run, the data
has to actually get INTO the computer and processed before it can be
stopped, and these programs can really mess up a computer when they
crash/break/etc.

Everyone should have a firewall, and a hardware firewall is the best thing
to have. Broadband routers are cheap these days and some even have the
option to connect a telephone modem to them.

Even good hardware firewalls do nothing to protect the user from
him/herself. Almost all spyware and many Trojans and worms are
downloaded and installed deliberately (albeit unknowingly) by the
user. So a software firewall, such as ZoneAlarm, that can detect and
warn the user of unauthorized out-going traffic is an important
element of protecting one's privacy and security.

I use both a router with NAT and Sygate Personal Firewall, even
though I feel that I'm not very likely to ever download and install a
Trojan. It simply seems to be a sensible precaution.
