Using Win XP Pro SP1, I need to get a good firewall that's relatively easy
to use. I have tried Sygate Personal Free Firewall but the Shields Up site
did not show all my ports to be Stealth which is what I wanted. Maybe I did
not know how to configure that program but your suggestions about how to
tweak that program or about other programs would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hey Gary,

Have you tried using Windows XP's firewall, I'm currently using it and runs
smoothly.

To Enable the Windows Xp Firewall, follow the instructions below:

1. Select my My Network Places, right click and choose Properties

2. Select your connection (example Local Area Connection) right click and
choose Properties.

3. After it loads, choose the Advanced Tab. When you arrive tick "Internet
Connection Firewall".

Regards,
Jose Francisco

I use the Sygate free firewall and the Normal setting (default) stealths
everything here. What did Shields Up show was open?

I agree. The key phrase in Gary's question was, "...and relatively easy
to use." I dl'd Zone Alarm a while ago and found it daunting with my
limited understanding. I guess conventional wisdom says that XP's
firewall is just fine if you don't need or want outgoing protection.
Shields Up shows my XP firewalled system stealthy in response to all the
test I could find to run.

So for now, this installation will remain XP firewalled and NAV scanned
as it has been from the beginning.

YMMV.

Sorry but I do not remember and have uninstalled it but may try again.

I only ask because it may not be the firewall, but a program or service that
is keeping a port open.

You DO know that you can stealth all your ports in Sygate as well as
any other firewall? All you have to do is click on "Advanced Rules"
and follow instructions. Very easy to list which ports you wish to
stealth. Give it a try before you decide on another firewall. But
if you do wish to try another, Zone Alarm (free version) is also very
good.

I still like the free version of Zone Alarm, it blocks all
ports by default as stealth. It asks when a programs tries
to send to the Internet and you can control whether to
allow, always allow or block that program.

Tiny Personal Firewall does the same thing. However, it also gives you a
much higher degree of control than ZA gives you.

I'm happy with the free version of Zone Alarm. You can get it at
