Firewall Problem

When I check my network connections, sometimes it says my connection is
firewalled, sometimes it says it isn't, yet my firewall is always set to
"on".

I'm still running the Windows firewall - so should I ditch this and run with
a freeware program as well ?

Yes, but instead not "as well". After you've installed the free
firewall, turn the Windows firewall off.
