Firewall disabled

I'm on XP and IE7.
On a number of occassions recently there is the icon appearing in the
Systems Tray telling me that my Windows Firewall has been disabled. Asking
me to click it to enable it again. But unable to turn it on again. The
window box says to go to Control panel/Windows Firewall to activate it, but
unable to again. Windows says that it is unable to.

I don't use any other firewall and have been OK so far for the past 3 years.
I then try all sorts of things including running my anti-spyware programs
and anti-virus and cleanup programs. Sometimes like today I am able to
activate the firewall again.

My Windows updates are on automatic and regularly installed, What could be
the problem and what can I do about it?
Thanks

This may seem a long shot, but are you running Norton AV or other Norton
software? That software totally stuffed my Security Centre and System
Restore.

No. I know about Norton and the problems it gives. I got rid of it years
ago. I use Avast free for the past many years with no problems. My firewall
problem started about 3 weeks ago.

Have you done a thorough check for malware? If this is a sudden problem did
you try a system restore to a point before the problem appeared?
