i get "generic host process for win32 services has encountered a problem and
needs to close. we are sorry for the inconvenience." When this happens, i
lose sound, and windows firewall is disabled. I don't use windows firewall
anyway, but when i click on the icon for the firewall, it says windows is
unable to open the firewall. i have to reboot and when i do, everything is
back to normal for an hour, or maybe all day. I can go to control panel and
click on sounds and audio devices and it says that I have no recording
devices or sound devices.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear with my first question...
I have run every software I can find for malaware and viruses
The "event" triggers a closure of windows firewall. I don't use this
firewall, I use norton. But, I have found that when this "event" occurs,
along with losing my sound features, if I attempt to open the windows
firewall, I don't get the option of turning it on or not....I get a box that
says " Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated
service is not running. Do you want to Start the Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS) servoce?"If I click yes, I get "Windows cannot start
the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service.
If i attempt to play music with Windows Media Player, I get "Windows Media
Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound
device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it
might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.
If I go to control panel and then sounds and audio devices, click on audio
and I see under default device..no playback devices..under sound
recording..no recording devices and under midi music playback..no midi
playback devices.
When I reboot my computer this all goes away. I can go to Media player and
start music and it will play all day...never stop. If I am not using media
player, that is when I get the message that the generic host process is
having a problem and needs to shut down. That message can come after an hour
or five hours, I cannot find a pattern to that...it just shuts down....
