Firewall/ICS Service Fails to Start

W

Will Niccolls

XP Pro. SP2 newly installed and updated.

Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing Service fails to start. Logs event #
7023 in Event Viewer with the error:

"An address incompatible with the requested protocol was used".

RPC and Event Logs services are running. No other errors are logged in
Eventvwr.msc. No other firewalls are currently running or installed.

Any ideas?

How interesting, Patti. Thanks for posting. Grrhh, something else yet to
consider while reading these posts. This Beta has a ways to go, from my
testing. But did not realize it already had articles.(

Hi Kelly,

I was actually looking for the article on Winsock2 corruption, in order to
post it, when I came across the article that I posted.....I had not seen it
before, either. I do recall sending feedback about the Anti-Spyware Beta to
MS via the "Suggested Improvements to Microsoft Products" link a few months
back when I first assisted someone in the newgroups who was receiving error
messages when trying to Start ICF after having used the Anti-Spyware. Having
assisted many (including my husband <g>) in ridding their machines of
newdotnet malware, I am quite familiar with how some malware will alter the
Winsock settings in the registry, preventing internet access after the
malware has been deleted but the altered Winsock settings remain
intact......and I passed that information on in my feedback form.

Thank you for the info--interestingly, I'd come across this article only
recently when investigating the Antispyware beta. I should've recalled it
myself! Maybe I'm on information overload trying to absorb Active Directory
and SBS 2003 documentation and KB's.

Thanks again, I'll give this a try, its at a customer site and certainly
fits the pattern--new SP2 install, new ASW beta install.

Hi Patti,

Again, most interesting and thanks. And glad hubby is all fixed up as well.
) As for spyware related, etc. Winsock2 issues, I have been pretty lucky
with the WinsockxpFix.exe.

The netsh winsock reset command did the trick. Running fine now.
