Firewall for Vista

I'm looking for suggestions on a decent third party firewall for Vista. For
XP, I was using Sygate.

What I'm looking for in a firewall is one that

1. Allows you to setup MAC and IP filtering so that only certain MAC
addresses and IP Addresses can access a pc on the intranet.
2. Shows you a list of all running applications and their status - ie
approved, denied, must ask for internet access
3. Prompts you when a new application tries to access the net.

Number 2 is rather important as I often find myself logging into the
firewall just to check which applications are actually running and
communicating on the net at any given time.

Thank you

The "Windows Defender" with is part of Vista is doing it very well.
I see no reason to use a third party SW

If you want granular control, take a look at the Windows Firewall with
Advanced Security located under Control Panel > Administrative Tools. Its
not gonna offer all the functionality that you are requesting, for that its
best you run Windows Server 2003 or 2008 with Microsoft ISA.

Windows Defender is an AntiSpyware utility, not a Firewall which usuall
usually use to filter inbound and outbound traffic.

Of course, but good that you made the remark.
The firewall of Vista proved also to be good.

Why not use Vista's builtin FW and othet goodies?
It serves all of your purposes and is easily configurable.
Probably you are behind a modem/router/hub which has NAT anyway - so what exactly are your fears?
Reading your text you seem to refer to ZoneAlarm's style -- of course you could use that but it is a
huge spaghetti program stealing CPU-cycles only to do again what Vista's already doing.
Do not even think about All-in-One Internet Security packages - they cause more conflicts and
necessary RAM upgrades.

All those functions are on board already - just do go once to Control Panel > Security Centre and
inspect its options.

The above is availbale by pressing Ctrl/Shift/Esc > Taskmanager Source control (not sure what it is
called in English)

There you will a live overview what´s running, networking, accessing drives , CPU etc.
Again, it´s all on board.

In case of doubt, read the manual ;-))

Actually what you need is advanced spyware and malware protection.Vista's
firewall is very good and all you need in a firewall especially if you are on
broadband and using a router which already has a hardware firewall.

You will find those under Vista's builtin Security Centre; just open it and look.
Windows Defender is active and updated every week or so by MS updates.

If you still feel intruded, run Ad-Aware or similar once a week.

Within Windows Mail you will find a builtin very active and aggressively configurable SPAM-filter,
which does its job excellently for me.

Vista was designed to fulfill these feautures, why bother for more and add-ons?
You will be looking for conflicts.

What type of sites are you visiting, what mails are you receiving, what apps are you downloading, I
wonder? ;-))

The OP was asking about firewalls, not ad-ware/spy-ware protection.

As for a firewall, Vista's built-in solution is more than adequate
for most consumers' needs. While it's not quite up to the ease-of-use
standards of Kerio or ZoneAlarm, it has been improved over WinXP's version.

There are two interfaces for Vistas built-in firewall:

1) A simplified one accessed through the Control Panel that is the only
one most people see. Sphinx's Vista Firewall Control
http://sphinx-soft.com/Vista/) is a piece of freeware that makes the
Vista Firewall much more useful to the average user.

2) And the more advanced "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security
(WF.msc), accessed via the Start Menu's Administrative Tools folder, for
the experienced user who wants more granular control.

If you prefer something a bit "chattier," Comodo Firewall Pro is
free for personal use.

I'm not at all impressed with the Windows Mail SPAM filter - too many false positives and false
negatives. I've turned it off and turned the Yahoo web-based spam filter on instead - that's not
great either - false positives and false negative, but much better that what Windows mail junk
filtering give me.

Off topic, how good is gmail web-based spam filtering?
