Firewall failure

I decided to give Sygate Firewall a try. Zone Alarm was uninstalled,
registry cleaned up to remove the usual suspects and Sygate installed.
Each time I logged in an error message from MSofts error reporting
routine told me that Sygate needed to close. Several install/uninstall
tries made but no good.

Decided to go back to Zone Alarm but it will not install. Early on in
the install routine the following Zone Alarm generated error message
appears:

Zonealarm-1230-english has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I searched the registry for any remaining refs to Sygate or Zone Alarm
but could not find any.
Anyone got any ideas please?

Sorry, forgot to say: system is XP SP2 with all recent updates installed.

Use System Restore to revert your system to a point when Zone Alarm was not installed and then try to install Sygate firewall.

Enable the Windows firewall and download CCleaner from ccleaner.com and
run the registry fix feature and the clean up feature.

Alias

uninstall the sygate firewall, run something like cccleaner
(www.ccleaner.com) using the 'issues' option to clear the registry of broken
links etc and then re-install sygate firewall. Incidentally when using
ccleaner in the issues mode make sure you accept the option to backup the
registry before fixing any problems.

Thanks Daniel, but I've had Zone Alarm on for so many years that System
Restore wouldn't have a chance.

Thanks for the suggestion John.
I tried ccleaner and it certainly found a lot of issues that my JV16 had
missed. I tried the Sygate install again but it still failed at the
same point on the first boot/log-on. The only difference now is that
the Sygate registration screen appears BEHIND the MS error reporting
dialogue box immediately after logon. I was actually able to fill in
half of the Sygate info requests before the page, AND the icon from the
System Tray, vanished.

Ho-Hum, back to square one!

I decided to give Sygate Firewall a try. Zone Alarm was uninstalled,

To add more confusion - I just checked Issues in CCleaner again and
found that all the removed items, obsolete registry entries, are back in
the registry. Many of them are for software which is very very long gone?!
