Firewall alert

Each time I start my notebook or reboot it the Security center pops up
to say My computer may be a risk from not having a firewall. When I
navigate inside the security center I find the box containing the
choice to manage my own firewall setup is unchecked. I check the box
and merrily go on my way until the next reboot where I again find that
box unchecked. How do I make that check box stay checked???

First, what is the virus/malware status of the computer? Be sure it is
clean:

Second, here are some links regarding the Windows Firewall:

MS antispyware tool disables Windows Firewall (or to reset firewall):
Start>Run cmd [enter]
netsh winsock reset catalog [enter]
Follow prompts and reboot.

Mr.Freud-
Perhaps your computer has some unresolved issues from its past. You
could give in and let it have a firewall until it feels more secure. I
am sure you can find a good therapist in your area who can help you
work it out.

NEVER download files from anywhere unless it is from the website of the
developer, manufacturer or some entity you trust. The developers
websites ALWAYS have the most up to date files that haven't been
tampered with by some third party who is "hosting"(read Leeching or
Stealing) those files without permission.

Turns out that XP didn't recognize Zone Alarm 5.0 but it did recognize
5.5. Or perhaps something went awry in the 5.0 install that was fixed
by 5.5 install. Now everything is cool!

I'm glad you got it fixed. Thanks for taking the time to post the
solution.
