Firefox tries to connect to Internet

Ralph

My son was using Firefox 1.0.3 the other day when it started to go slower
and slower and eventually stopped. He had to End Task it.
We are using Windows 2000. I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it.
It now tries to connect to the internet periodically. I am on dial up.
I have checked that the option to check for software updates and newer
plugins is not selected. I have also run AdAware, Search & Destroy and my
virus scanner over the drives finding nothing.
If I run IE I do not get this happening, but prefer not to use it.

Any ideas what to look for next?

TIA

It may be an IE setting that makes this happen - I know that doesn't
seem to make sense, but humour me :)

Go into Internet Explorer, and click on Tools - Internet Options. On
the Connections tab in that dialog box, about half-way down, there
are three options: Never dial a connection, Dial whenever a
connection is not present, and Always dial my default connection.
Choose "Never dial a connection", click Apply and OK, and see if it
fixes the problem.

Is it trying to load RSS feeds?

The most productive thing to do is to ignore infantile, pathetic trolls
like Mike Andrade. Just do a Google search for his name, and you will
see that his pathetic life is comprised of trolling every forum known
to man day and night, and popping off like a lame punk to everyone who
could care less what he has to say.

Tried that, it makes no difference.

Meterus, you may be onto something. Kerio tells me that firefox is
connecting to www43.thny.bbc.co.uk which appears to be a BBC news page.
If it is a RSS news feed, how do I turn it off?

IIRC there is a folder called "Live bookmarks" in the Bookmarks menu, which
contains the BBC feed. I deleted it long time ago because for RSS I use the
Sage extension.

In addition, if you don't want Firefox to start your dialup connection, do
these easy steps:

- type about:config in the address bar, then press Enter
- in the filter field past this text: network.autodial-helper.enabled
- now you'll see only this voice, double click on it to change its value
from true to false.

That's all.

Thanks Meterus and Maria, I found the newsfeed under the Bookmarks menu.
Deleted entry and end of problem.
