Firefox - It's driving me nuts!!!

I switched over to firefox from IE because IE was so slow no matter what I
did. Firefox worked GREAT the first week or so and now it is as slow as
molasses. I clean and maintain, I've checked our internet service. I've
got AVG virus and many spyware programs and cleaning programs. I have
windows xp with 1 gb ram, pentium IV. It is slow when trying to open a
website or even opening my mail. This is so ironic since when I first
installed it, it was lightening speed. It's a pain to get on the computer
anymore.
Any ideas?

Have you checked your Internet connections speed to make sure that the
problem is not with your connection? Firefox does not have an e-mail so
I assume that you are checking your e-mail on the web. I have been
using Firefox and Thunderbird and Mozilla for years with no problems.

Do you have any extensions installed?
Have you tried a full reinstall?
Have you tried creating a new profile for firefox?
They could all be the cause.

There are known problems with the latest version of Firefox. Among them, are
slowness of loading and huge amounts of virtual memory being used. I use
version 1.0.7 and haven't have a moment's problems. I'd advise getting a
copy of this version and do the uninstall/reinstall with this version.

There is also a Firefox/Mozilla forum in which you can ask your questions.

When a web browser starts fast and gets slow, you have to ask
yourself: What changed?

My guess is one of two things:
- malware patching into the browser and/or traffic
- failing sectors on the HD slowing down cache access
I've got AVG virus and many spyware programs and cleaning programs.

That's nice, but it doesn't automatically mean you don't have malware
active on the system. Do you get pop-ups or unexpected start pages?
Do you find you're unable to get av updates or access av sites?

Qs:

What connects you to the Internet?
What Service Pack level of XP are you on?
Is the system faster when disconnected from Internet?
Is only web browsing slow, i.e. downloads and mail are fast?
How are your hard drive(s) partitioned?
Where is web cache located?

Thanks for the info - what does a new reinstall entail and why would that be
needed?
I don't know what a profile is or extensions? So if you could explain
further I would appreciate it.

Hi
I do not get popups but do get unexpected webpages sometimes? But not
startup pages. What should I do for that?
I have cable modem, Service Pack 2,
Both browsing and opening mail are slow
I have 2 hard drives, a C and a D, never use the D, don't even know what is
on it. I don't have anyting partitioned that I know of. Don't even know
what that means.
I don't know where web cache is - I clean it by using QuickCleanXP, CLeaner
and then going to Tools-Options - clear cookies.
Hope this helps.
