Firefox bookmark lost

Hi all,

FIrefox bookmarks.html file gone away after a sever crash.
I didn't think that the bookmarks could so definitively disappear,
but they can. No disk investigator nor NU unerase could get
them back, and they are not in a fragment (like .chk chain).
Hint : backup your bookmarks !

You could define the location of the bookmarks.html file.
Enter "about:config" at the firefox address box.
Add string key "browser.bookmarks.file",
value "/folder/to/bookmarks.html"

Look in your firefox profile directory.
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application
Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\RANDOMSTRING\

Firefox automatically saves backups of the bookmarks file there from time to time.
Chances are that many of your bookmarks will still be there in an backup.

I had a different issue.

A few days ago, while I was browsing (FF 1.5), one of my bookmarks
disappeared. I had to recreate it.

Didn't think that could happen.

Yes of course it does, -if i have had the good idea to upgrade :)
(version 1.5 do that)

That's why I use the Plain Old Favourites extension...utilises IE's
faves. Rather than use a single file, IE's faves are individual
items...and thus less likely to all disappear at once.
Easier to manage too, via the faves menu on the desktop.

I recommend that extension too. Mozilla bookmarks are way too
vulnerable to corruption because they're just one file, and it's edited
every time you add or delete a bookmark.

But Firefox creates a backup of the bookmarks file in the folder called
"bookmarkbackups", so it's not a total loss, IMO. Just restore one of
the latest backups and you're set.

That appears to automatically create a daily backup, but only for about
the past 4 days. The advantage to MozBackup is a permanent backup
anytime.
