Firefox 1.5 Extensions

All my extensions are working fine since upgrading. (even Adblock)

I removed all extensions, uninstalled Fx 1.0.7 and then installed Fx
1.5.

Tweak Network Settings couldn't be re-installed, so I switched to
FasterFox.

There seemed to be a new ("unofficial") version of Adblock, so I
replaced the old version, 0.5 d2 nightly 39, with that one, version
0.5.2.056. Filterset.G Updater seems to work fine with this version of
Adblock and could be installed in 1.5. None of my settings were gone
after upgrading (or so it appears).

The only thing I'm missing now is the BBCode extension from Jed Brown,
but I'm guessing he will have a compatible version for 1.5 in no time.

When installing a new version of Firefox, open Windows Explorer >
Programs > Mozilla Firefox.

1. Rename to > Mozilla Firefoxold, ignore the warning message.
2. Install new version.
3. Dont like, go back to Windows Explorer, delete Mozilla Firefox
folder.
4. Rename Mozilla Firefoxold to Mozilla Firefox.

Adding this extension makes the older versions compatible.

See my other post. It puts a 'Make all compatible' button on the
extensions window.

But here Firefox prevents all attempts at installing /that/ too. Even after
making the suggested changes in about:config.

And that's not the end of it. Installing 1.5 quite separately to 1.0.7
still managed t corrupt that version. It works and is usable, but a nasty
wide bar rather like a toolbar has been added below the browser's window. I
can find no setting to remove it, it cannot be resized in any way, but is
completely blank except for a feint red circumflex mark near one edge.

I've stuck with Firefox now for a considerable time, through all its ups
and downs even though cursing it at times. I tolerated it for its positive
features and excused the adverse things on the grounds that it was a
virtual beta. It now makes claims to be of commercial quality. It isn't.
Perhaps it will be one day.

In the meantime, I'm abandoning it for Opera, which I've been bringing more
and more into use. Bye bye Firefox, for now anyway.

Cheers,

Roy

yep...that's exactly what happened here! (except there was some other
remnants of code in red in the bar). I think I will like most of the
Firefox improvements, but I don't WANT it to automatically look for
other versions of itself and corrupt them, not do I want it to
automatically use the same bookmarks and settings.

My wife has her own version of an older Firefox, and she does not
like sudden change, so I have left hers alone...but Firefox will not
allow two different copies to ne open at the same time, whereas I have
5 different versions of Opera on the PC, and I can easily have two or
three open!

Well....I will see. I use Opera 75% of the time anyway...and usually
version 7.....they started dumbing it down with 8. (I'm not greedy...I
want Opera 7 with many of the extensions of Firefox 1.7)

I had this problem after installing 1.5. I had uninstalled
1.07 which had been a bit flaky lately hopeing to avoid any
problems. I still ended up with almost half the screen used
by the wide space at the bottom with a couple of red carets
on the left side. Having nothing to losi an wanting to redo
my extensions anyway. I located and copied my bookmarks
file to a safe location. I then located all of the mozilla
folders in the4 system and manually deleted them. I then
rebooted and reinstalled 1.5. I spent some time at the
extensions and themes sites to reinstall the 1.5 components
I wanted. I now have a very quick and useable Firefox 1.5
installation.

I subsequently found a way, via a posting here or elsewhere, to make all my
existing extensions work. A small problem subsequently with just one of
them, which I uninstalled as it wasn't a particular favourite.

FIrefox 1.5 certainly sems to be faster, but there is one thing whch I find
irritating, and another which is a bit of a puzzle.

The annoyance is that there are already some highly recommended extensions
appearing on the Firefox pages which this version refuses to install. On
examination they are rated for version 1.6 or above. That's just crazy, and
in any event I want to be the one making the decision what to install or
not install.

The puzzle is that occasionally Firefox will produce one of its standard
cookie alerts, but this time for one to be set by Mozilla.org and when I'm
visiting a page totally unconnected with mozilla.org, and with no other tab
opened at such a site either. This appears to be completely random and, as
I say, occasional. Very curious behaviour suggesting to me something hard
coded into this version of Firefox. I still have it installed, but I'm
tending to use it only as a comparison with Opera no longer being sure of
its bona fides. Has anyone else experienced this?

Cheers,

Roy

After the installing of Firefox 1.5 I haven´t any good
connection to the WEB. And all Plugins and Addons wasn´t
working.

So I deinstalled this version veeeeeeeeeeeeery quickly and work
on with the older version and with the IE 6.

Older versions will be a better friend for users.... :-)

I tried going back to 1.07 after upgrade but, found that
1.07 would load acording to the task manager but, would not
display on screen. After a few hours of screwing around, I
decided thething needed some mods before and I had nothing
to lose by deleting everything Firefox and Mozilla except
the bookmarks. 1.5 then installed and runs flawlessly. I
think there was siomething screwed about the setting for a
long time before the upgrade - maybe too much debris from
prior upgrades.

I'd just like to add that this is one of the reasons I use Portable Firefox.
I recommend nabbing 1.0.7 while it's still available.

I can think of two possibilities. Firefox comes with at least one live
bookmark. Live bookmarks are links to RSS or Atom feeds. I don't know
that there's a live bookmark for mozilla.org in the default bookmarks
file, but if there is, mozilla.org might send a cookie when the
bookmark is refreshed. If it's a live bookmark that causes what you're
seeing, it should happen pretty soon after starting Fx, then
occasionally thereafter.

The other possibility is link prefetching. The short explanation is
that webpages can have Firefox prefetch links, using idle bandwidth,
and prefetched documents can set cookies. Google uses prefetching.
For a great deal more info on prefetching, including the way to turn it
off, see
<http://www.mozilla.org/projects/netlib/Link_Prefetching_FAQ.html>.

Both that explanation, and the other which you suggested, certainly crossed
my mind. But whatever it was it no longer seems to happen on the occasions
I have run Firefox subsequently.

It certainly does make rather a lot of outgoing connections unrelated to
the pages being browsed. It also seems to generate some incoming
connections (could be Mozilla related sites) to unopened ports which are
automatically blocked by my firewall. I've never seem behaviour like that
with Opera, and I can't recall seeing it with earlier versions. All rather
curious.

Roy
