Firefox 1.5.0.2 Error

My Firefox 1.5.0.1 automatically updated itself, but it is now no longer
starting.

Each time I launch Firefox, I get a window with this error:

XML Parsing Error: syntax error
Location: chrome://browser/content/browser.xul
Line Number 1, Column 1:"chrome://browser/skin/" type="text/css"?>
^

Any advice on how to correct this error gratefully received.

When you have a problem with FF try starting Firefox in safe mode (look
in the your Windows Start menu for this option). If it starts up then
you will know it is one or more of your extensions. You will have to
manually disable them all and then re-enable them one at a time until
you find the culprit(s). Here is a list of problematic extensions that
might be helpful to you. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions

Another solution is to do a clean install. Make a backup of your
bookmarks with MozBackup. Uninstall Firefox, make sure that the folder
you installed FF to has been deleted. Then rename your current profile
to something that you will remember (alternatively you could also just
delete the profile). Now you can re-install FF 1.5.0.2. A new profile
folder will be created when you start your browser.

Hope this is helpful.

==== sounds like a theme problem, you might start in safe mode if that
works, update your themes and if there is a update for the theme and it
updates try a restart.. if not use the default one .===========

Thanks to the "Six Million Dollar Man" , jmatt and mike555 for the
solutions.

I acted rather rashly -- before your replies came in -- I downloaded the
full version of 1.5.0.2 and installed it on top of the non-working
Firefox!

Luckily for me, it installed and all my settings/extensions were
retained! The 1.5.0.2 installer somehow accounted for the "bug" and
Firefox is back to normal.

Thanks for your responses though. Next time, I'll wait for replies from
experienced users before taking action.

A lot of people have done that, including myself. One would think that it
would be a good idea to include deletion of the original version in the
installation process?

I meant that I did not back up all the bookmarks, extensions and so on,
before installing on top. Had it not worked, then I would have spend a
lot of time in putting them back together.
