Finding out who last modified a file

Is there any way to see the user id that last modified a file? Viewing File
Properties shows the date/time last accessed and last modified, but by whom?
For a business environment with shared files and directories, this would
seem a rather basic piece of info, but I cannot find a way to get it. I hope
there is one?

We run XP Professional Ver 5.1 with SP2.

Thank you for responding. It looks like I lack the admin authority to turn
on auditing in my domain. Oh well. The procedure seems quite cumbersome
just for me to find out who updated a file that I put out on our LAN. I am
listed as both the owner and author of this file, which fact everybody else
can see. Some other party opens my file and gets creative with it and saves
their changes, the file still bears my name, but I have to be a security
admin to see who messed with it? Crazy.

Take your concerns to your IT Dept. or your Human Resources Dept. or
your boss. Let them deal with it and your systems administrator can
turn on auditing if s/he feels it is desirable.

If the document is an Office document, its properties page has a Summary
tab, and in it there is a field for both "Author username" and "Last Saved
By username". These are put there by the application (Word, Excel, etc),
not by the OS.
