Finding old documents

I prepare a lot of correspondence and would like to develop a reference
system to be able to locate specific documents in the future. Is there a
feature in Word that will automatically insert a reference tag at the bottom
of the page indicating location on hard drive?

Yes. View headers and footers. Insert the Filename and path field from the
AutoText list.
Note, though, that this does not update upon saving. The field has to be
updated after the file is saved (and then you want to save the file again).

In the footer pane, click on the AutoText menu on the Header and Footer
toolbar and choose "Filename and path."
