I found a new Dell (Dell Axim X51v) that runs "Windows Mobile 5.0". Is that
the WinCe 5.0 OS?

Hi,
Windows Mobile 5 and WinCE 5 have compatible code bases. However, they are
not the same (though it would be possible for a WinCE 5 device to be built
with the same features as a Windows Mobile 5 device). Windows CE allows
device manufacturers to customize the platform to deliver whatever features
that manufacturer chooses -- for example, a Windows CE device might or might
not include Word (Windows Mobile 5 devices include Word as a standard
feature). Often, a WinCe device manufacturer has some specific market in
mind, and includes only those features needed to address that market. Also,
most WinCE devices may be modified by the user to add additional features
(using Platform Builder), as needed.
Windows Mobile 5 does not expose Windows CE's real-time model. So, that is
one difference that might have an impact on a design.
I suspect that 99% of all hand-held devices will be Windows Mobile 5, while
some small number of industrial-grade handheld device manufacturers may
choose to employ a Windows CE 5 core to facilitate extension in ways that
might be more difficult or expensive if they used Mobile 5.
All of what I've said here is "my understanding, " and shouldn't be taken as
the final story. Someone else may have a different take on it.

Yes, if it is WM 5.0 then it is built on WinCE 5.0

Actually I should have focused my question better. Will this device that runs
Windows Mobile 5 allow be to deploy WinCe NetCF2.0 App's using Vs2005
Professional? Will it supply the support that the NetCF2.0 Framework needs?
That is the main reason why I am looking at this device. I just want it as a
test bed for managed code projects deployed from Vs2005 Professional.

I have downloaded the Blog and will read it.
Actually I should have focused my question better. Will this device that

Professional? Will a device that supports Windows Mobile 5 likely supply the

CF v2.0 is supported on WM2003 PPC, WM 5.0 and WinCE 5.0
So the answer to your question is YES.

I use the Axim x51v. It may not be the best in all ways, but it seems a
good compromise. Yes, it will work with VS2005.
