If I run up regedit and do a find (ctrl+F), after a little while the pc will
reboot.
No blue screen.

This appears to indicate a corrupt registry however on XP there is no
registry checker.
Any ideas on how to fix?

XP PRO SP1 and windows updated to the max.

Go to system properties (My Computer->Right click->Properties), Advanced
tab, Startup and Recovery, uncheck Automatically restart, reboot. Then see
which error code the OS gives. It's probably registry read error.
