Find Files Failure in Win XP

When I start a search for files or folders, Win XP Pro
appears to start searching then stops after about two
seconds with no results. For example, I have hundreds of
JPEG files on my HDD but a search for *.jpg turns up no
hits.

I have looked to ensure there are no filters in place. I
have tried wild cards etc. I have made sure that the
search is pointing to the root directories on my HDDs. I
have no idea how to get the search working again.

Any clues please.......?
