Find does not work in XP Explorer

I have a home computer pre-installed with Windows XP Home
Edition. Whenever I try to Find files or folders within
the explorer it does not work. The follow on steps are
missing, the search window goes blank and grey.

I am a 'late' computer beginner, my PC game with a CD for
XP restoration, what can I do ? Reinstall everything or
what? This is all new to me, and do not want to lose any
files stored on my machine if this all goes wrong !!!

Can anyone help ?

There is not a find function in windows explorer, as far or as good
as I can recall there never has been. Start---search---type in what
you
are wanting to find.
