Shut down often does not work

As usual in XP, when I want to shut down, I click Start, then Turn Off
Computer. As I bring the cursor to the Turn Off button, the background goes
grey. I then click Turn Off. Most of the time the shutdown goes normally, but
quite often nothing happens after I click Turn Off.

What is happening here? Mike

One more thing:
I just saw a reply to a problem similar to mine, that suggested checking
whether there was a CD or DVD in the CD drawer. I had one in mine. If the
problem remains after removing it, I will repost. Otherwise, there is no need
to send a reply. Thanks for being here to help goofs like me. Mike

I use Ad-Watch and it sometimes locks out shutdown. I have bought a
number of computers over the years and it does it on all of them.
Killing the process will allow it to shutdown correctly. Or closing it
before shutting down works too. So anybody using Ad-Watch (part of the
Ad-Aware commercial line), now you know.

Thanks very much, Bill. I don't have Ad-Watch but will be alert for that
issue if I ever get it. My problem seems to be solved. Will know in a few
days. Mike
