Find does not work in XP Explorer

Hi,
I have recently installed Windows XP - about 2 weeks ago. I have
installed a number of programs in the past week. However today I
noticed that my Find does not work.
If I go into an explorer window and click the Search icon at the top,
I get a blank side bar, with just a cross at the top. If I go to
Start->Search->For Files and Folders from the Start Menu - a explorer
window pops up, with a blank side bar with a cross at the top.

Does any one have some ideas.

A similar topic like this was posted about 2 years ago and in that
someone suggested the solution at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm (Select S
and scroll down to Search doesnt work) This suggestion requires me to
go into the Windows\Inf folder and locate the srchasst.inf file.

I don't have a Windows\Inf - I may have a srchasst.inf - but I
cant search for it.
Hoping for some ideas.
O.O.

The C:\Windows\inf folder is a hidden folder. You need to turn on show
hidden files and folders. To do this open My Computer | Tools | Folder
Options | View. Put a tic mark in Show hidden files and folders.

Dear Rock,
Thanks a lot for responding. Yes, my mistake was that the folder was
hidden. I did try to install and do all that the link mentioned above
required - but I still cannot get Find to work i.e. I still cannot
see anything in the side bar when Find is invoked with the exception of
the cross at the top i.e. to close to bar.

I hope someone has some ideas.
Regards,

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

Reinstalling the Search companion

1. Login as administrator
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install.

This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses. When you're prompted
for the system files, insert your Windows XP CD, or point to
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder (if you've applied SP1 or SP2
separately) which-ever has the updated system files.

Thanks Ramesh for taking your time to respond to this. Actually I
already did what you suggested (in part i.e. the install of the
Srchasst.inf) because it was mentioned at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm (See my original post). I
had not done the registering of the jscript and the srchui.

Anyway after getting your post, I have repeated everything according
to the order that you suggested - and I still get nothing i.e. my
search side bar is still empty with nothing on it.

Yes Ramesh, I did what you said. I located the Srchasst.inf in the
%systemroot%\inf directory. I then clicked on it and chose to install
- which it did from my Win XP CD. (However before this - I
registered the two DLL's i.e. jscript and srchui. )

Thanks Ramesh.
Its almost a week that I last looked at this topic - but I had tried
your suggestion, and it did not work (A lot of installation etc - and
even after a restart my search side bar is still blank.) I ultimately
am using google desktop to get my searching done - if MS cannot do
it.
Thanks a lot.

Actually I just ruined my computer at the end of December trying to do
a repair install - forcing me to do a complete reinstallation. So I
don't want to try this. If there is something simpler - I would not
mind attempting it, but I don't trust the XP repair install.

Thanks for your help Ramesh
