Find >cell_value with COUNTIF. Can't Refer to Cell Value in "quotemarks"

Hi,
I've got a date in a specific cell, I want to search a range of cells
to see if there is a value greater than it in there.

So say in cell A1 I've got the date 03/07/2010. I've then got a load
of dates in column B. In cell A2 I did have the formula
=COUNTIF(B1:B100,A1), but now I want to see if there are any dates
greater than A1 in my range. I can't use =COUNTIF(B1:B100,">A1") as I
can't use a cell reference inside the quotes. What's the best
alternative?

Try this:

=COUNTIF(B1:B100,">"&A1)
