Final word on AVG?

I've been reading and searching topics and threads on AVG on this NG till my
hair started to go grey. And still everything people say seem to conflict
with one another.

As I understand it, AVG Free version 7.5.430 is supposed to be Vista
compatible and from my own experience with it in 5744 it seems to be good.
Except for one thing.

Every time windows re-loads I get a message saying, "Could not initialize
AVG Anti-Virus kernel interface. Application cannot run." I click OK and then
manually start AVG without any problems.

So how to get AVG to start up? Looking into Defender I see it there
PERMITTED. I go to MSCONFIG and see it there under Start-up.

So what's the deal? People here seem to be divided into three groups. Those
who somehow never had this issue (I have no idea why or how), those who did
have it but had a workaround and mysteriously never shared that work-around
with others (thanks a lot! ; )) and those who just gave up on AVG altogether
and now whole-heartedly recommend other solutions such as Avast (I despised
Avast due to its resource footprint that I took it off within hours).

So, can people here who have the workaround please share with us mere mortals?

One of my customers experienced this on an NT4 WS machine (AVG *Pro* 7.5).
So I suspect a glitch in one of their updates caused issues on a small
number of machines.

The customer reinstalled AVG using a fresh download from their website,
and that fixed it.

I've had the same error, but I don't think it's the fault of AVG.

Oddly enough it only happens if I log in immediately after a reboot. I
found if I walk away to get a drink or something and come back to the
log on screen waiting for my password, it doesn't give me the error.
If I'm sitting here and restart, I find the drive is thrashing away at
the log on screen for about 20-30 seconds, loading Vista in the
background while it waits for my password. If I wait for the disk
activity to stop, AVG loads up just fine. If I don't wait, AVG fails.

It's as if Vista is starting some components too fast and AVG doesn't
get a chance to load the control center properly, likely due to one of
Vistas services not running yet.

I had a similar problem with a batch file I created to clean out junk
from a few temp folders. It's set up as a task to run when Vista
starts, however, it fails to run immediately after I log in, giving me
an error that the user is not logged in. Which is really weird since
the task is set to run only when I'm logged in and it can't run until
I'm logged in, so why is it saying I'm not logged in? Anyway, I
enabled the time delay option so it starts the task after five
minutes, and no more errors.

Bill,

I think you've hit the nail right on the head. After reading your reply I
noticed the exact same thing as you noted. I thought it was an AVG bug but
this is certainly looking more like a Vista bug now.

I take it the time delay you mentioned doesn't work on AVG. Are you still
getting the startup error with AVG then?

Just to add something. I am beginning to think it's a Defender issue. Even
after one logs on, I started Defender and looked at the startup programs and
Permissions were being generated after log on, which to me seems strange for
startup programs. They should be handled prior to log on. As soon as the
Permissions in Defender are generated, AVG can be loaded fine. God damn
Defender! ; )

AVG free will be discounted Jan 15. The new version, 7.5, will be $29.95
and Vista compliant.

Sorry, I believe free version 7.1 will be discontinued. It looks like free
and purchased versions will be Vista compliant though.
