FilterKeys problem

Windows XP Pro SP2
Lab with 9 identical PCs
Each PC has two "limited" accounts and 1 "admin" account

At login, a student held down the right shift key for 8+ seconds & initiated
the "filter key" notice. The student & instructor were unable to log onto
the computer.

I need to disable the FilterKey feature.

I promoted each of the limited accounts to "admin" level; then logged in, on
each of the 3 accounts and edited the registry

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\Keyboard Response]
"Flags"=""

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\HighContrast]
"Flags"=""

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\MouseKeys]
"Flags"=""

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\StickyKeys]
"Flags"=""

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\ToggleKeys]
"Flags"=""

The above steps were taken from
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...mode=linearplus

I rebooted [ not logged off ] held down the right shift button for 8+
seconds & again the "filter keys" screen appeared.

I have searched the registry for "filterkeys" and found nothing.

I created HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\FilterKeys] and
string value of"Flags" with a value of ""

control panel > accessibility options > "keyboard" tab > F'ilterKeys" is not
selected. "Settings" button > "ignore quick keystrokes and slowdown the
repeat rate" is selected. It is a radio button so I cannot "deselect" it. >
settings I have set it to "no keyboard repeat" under the "override setting on
the keyboard control panel".

All critical windows updates were installed, as of 9 June 2006. I have not
installed the June set.

I await your assistance.

Sincerely,
WC

When I clear the 'Use Shortcut' checkbox in the 'Settings for FilterKeys' dialog, Regmon shows that
under:

"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\Keyboard Response"

'Flags' is changed to "122"

if I recheck the option & apply, 'Flags' is changed to "126"

If you want modify behavior at the Login screen, the changes need to be made under:

"HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Accessibility\Keyboard Response"

changing the 'Flags' value found there to "122" turns off the right shift key shortcut.

The default is 126. I have changed it to . Do you want me to set it to
122?

I want to be certain that I understand your suggestion?

That's what I would suggest -- it turns off the right shift key shortcut -- that's what you want,
isn't it?

Thanks for the clarifying your suggestion.

Originally, the notice came up ONLY when one held down the right shift
button for 8+ seconds, to include at logon. Some of the users / students are
very computer illiterate.

At logon, on these 9 computers, if the FilterKeys notice appears, the
computers act as if the "CAPS LOCK" key has been activated, even though the
CAPS LOCK key has NOT been activated. If that happens, re-booting resolves
that activation.

After making the registry changes I noted in my first posting of this
thread, the FilterKeys notice no longer appears at logon if one holds down
the right shift key for 8+ seconds, but the the CAPS LOCK issue persists.

I need to disable the FilterKeys feature, not merely the appearance of the
FilterKeys notice.

Sincerely,
WC

Hmmm.....

When I was testing this, I observed the caps lock behavior you describe ( no FilterKeys notice, just
a beep, then the caps lock state was inverted) BEFORE I changed anything.

After changing the Flags value to 122 and rebooting, holding down the right shift key during logon
had no effect.

Not sure why you're not seeing the same thing... (not sure why I can't get in any state where I see
the FilterKeys notice :)

Hope someone else jumps in here with some tie-breaking info.
