I would like to apply a filter to my contacts (category is "friends") and
then see just this group in the email address book so I can pick and choose
just from this subset. using Outlook 2003.

Is this possible?

You can't categorize the address book view. Instead, display your Contacts in
the By Category view, select the people you want from the appropriate
category, then click Actions>New Message to Contact.
