Filling in To, CC, and BCC - Outlook 2003

The suggest address option only seems to work from the
address book. I have been told that there is a way to
configure so that the suggest list provides choices based
upon prior entries (sort of like urls in Explorer). Is
this true? If so, how can I set it up? If not, how
exactly does the suggest work(Global address book, local
address book, etc.)

Thanks, John

It uses previous mail addresses already entered in the To, etc. fields. It
does not use the Outlook Contacts folder (for Outlook 2003) - please, when
posting, specify your version.

The version (Outlook 2003) is noted in the subject header.

When we type a previously used email address eg:
(e-mail address removed), no suggestions appear. When we type a
name from the global address book, eg: John, a list of all
Johns in the Global Address Book appears. Obviously,
something is not configured right. Please help!

Thanks, John

The version is Outlook 2002. Sorry, since we installed
Office Pro 2003, I assumed Outlook was called Outlook 2003
as mentioned in subject header

What is the setting of Tools>Options>E-mail Options>Advanced E-mail
Options>Suggest names while completing To, Cc, and Bcc fields?

Office 2003 should, indeed, contain Outlook 2003. Office XP contained
Outlook 2002.

You appear to be confusing autocompletion with autoresolution. The "Suggest
Names" feature refers to autocompletion, which occurs _before_ you tab out
of the To: field and does not use Address Book data. "Automatic Name
checking" is autoresolution and occurs_after_ you exit the To: field and
does use your Address Book data.

mail is checked on.

This should, then, suggest previously entered addresses as you type. and
should be the option you want. If it's not working, uncheck the option,
close OPutlook, delete the .NK2 file in %USERPROFILE%\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook, restart Outlook, and recheck the option to let
Outlook recreate the file. It may take a while to build it back up. If
that doesn't work, create a new mail profile.

If you haven't already deleted your nk2 file, you may
want to save the information that is in that file.
There's a utility called Owtlook Autocomplete File Editor.

It's about $20 bucks and can be found at www.dcs-
imaging.com/products.htm

If that program will not open your file, it doesn't mean
that your file no longer exists. Turning on advanced
search settings and view hidden and system folders,
search for all *.NK2, or *.nick. Most likely the first
search will find your file(s).

If there is any size to it (indicating several entries),
try the program mentioned above. If it's only 4K or so,
do what the other chap suggested and try deleting it.

If the program mentioned above doesn't open it, that
company provides an inexpensive service where you can
send your NK2 file to them, they can open it, and either
send you a CSV or TXT file of its contents, or send you a
clean NK2 file. Obviously, if you only have a few
entries in this file their charge of $50 or so may be
cost prohibitive, but if you have years of data collected
in that file, it may be worth it to you.

John:

Go to: Tools, Option, Preferences Tab, E-Mail Options, Advanced E-Mail
Aptions and check the box next to "Suggest names when completing To:, Cc:,
and Bcc: fields.

This info. isn't stored in your Contact folder. It is stored in a separate
system file. That file can be opened using an editor called Owtlook found
at www.dcs-imaging.com/products.htm

Good luck,
Ran
