fill in form

I have created a fill in form using a table in MS Word 2003. I am using cell
borders as underlines. I have three rows with these underlines so emloyees
can answer a question. In these cells I have inserted text form fields. How
can I allow the overflow text to go to the next row without using macros? I
have already exactly fit the rows and limited the amount of characters in the
text form field. Please advise.

I'm slightly confused by this. If you have limited the field length, what
over flow text do you mean. Are you not allowing enough room for input you
are expecting?

If you want to provide a space for extra optional input then just add
another field whereever you want. On a paper form it might say something
like please use an additional sheet if necessary; providing an unlimited
extra field somewhere (or an unprotected area of the document if you want)
is the electronic equivalent, isn't it?

It is a general fill blank comment section. I have three rows to allow them
to put their comments, I want them to stay within the underlines (border)
provided for them-this is why i limited characters in each of fields. Does
this make sense?

If you expect more than three rows to be used, give them four (or five or
more) or tell them to be concise. Maybe I'm missing something but you seem
to want to allow an indeterminate amount of text in a finite space and it
can't be done.

You can't get overflow from one field to flow into the next without macros,
and then it would not be easy!

You could put a drawing behind your table that has the three lines. Format
your table with no borders but for exact size. Then one field will flow to
the next line. You'll have to adjust line spacing to fit.

What you are talking about is what Word calls an "online form." Check this
in help. For more about online forms, follow the links at

Hi this worked thank -you so much; however, I have a new dilemna- when I lock
my form fields the lines that I made using the line draw tool (according to
your advise) sometimes disappear. How can I make this stop?

Do the lines print?

When do they disappear, just when someone is typing in the field? Do you
have your form fields formatted to always display in gray?

If they print out, that is the best you are going to get. You could try
moving them in front of your form but that might stop your user from seing
what they are typing.
