when I Start > Run > Browse for a file to run, the Browse dialog box
displays by default the programs (.exe, .pif, .com, .bat, .cmd). How can I
add there the .msu extension?

On the Run Browse menu, select, where it says "programs" and change it to
"All Files."

The .MSU file is a Microsoft Update installer package, not an executable.

You need to associate this file type with the 'Windows Update Standalone
Installer'.

Right click the .MSU file and select Open With.
Click the Browse Button.
Navigate to C:\Windows\System32.
Select the 'wusa.exe' file.
Select Open.

This should add the 'Windows Update Stanalone Installer' to the list of
programs.
Select this program and make sure the 'Always use the selected program to
open this kind of file' check box is selected.
Click OK.

Now when you run the .MSU file, it should execute the standalone installer.

Frankly, because it's not. Neither is MSI (the prior Microsoft Installer
file format) and it does not show up as an executable either if you browse
for executable files. Executable files are the ones listed in the OP's
message.
