I have a Dell 9100 Dimension which runs Win XP SP2. I have McAfee Security
Suite (virusscan, firewall and privacy service) along with Spywareblaster,
Adaware and Spybot. I am 100% up-to-date on all services including Microsoft
Security updates. Yesterday I booted my pc and received an error 'Files on
your computer have been replaced by files not recognized by Windows. In order
for your computer to work properly, insert the XP SP2 cd'. I inserted the CD
but did not see an option to fix this problem so I removed the CD and
rebooted my pc. The reboot did not generate the error again and my pc seems
to be working fine. I was able to run the internet (I have Earthlink Total
Access), win explorer etc. and I do not see any problems. Can someone tell me
what I should do and if there is a way to check my pc for any problems? I ran
virusscan, Spy-bot and Adaware and did not find any problems. Any assistance
would be GREATLY appreciated. Bryan

Hi

From Start>Run type:

sfc /scannow

That will check the system files to see if any are corrupted or missing.
You may have to have your XP CD to hand.

Hi Will,
Thank you very much for your quick reply. Since I am at work now (9am
EDT) I will have to try this tonight. I will post back by 11pm (EDT). THANK
YOU AGAIN!

Hi Will,
I ran scannow. It read the XP cd. When it finished it did not give any
messages at all. What does this mean? If it had restored or fixed files,
would it have told me? If this means that nothing was fixed, I guess this
whole incident is still a mystery. My pc continues to run normally. What
should I do at this point? Thanks again Will. I really appreciate your
assistance. By the way, I did not install any new programs lately. Bryan
