John

I need suggestions on the following problem. Any help
would be appreciated.

Using Windows XP Pro SP1. I am unable to view any files
on any CD-ROMs placed in the CD-ROM drives. I know the
CD-ROMs are good, The hardware is XP compatible (on the
HCL list)etc.

I have read that SP1 should solve this known problem but
it does not. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the
drivers etc. I have noticed that if I boot with a non-
autoplay CD in the drive that I can view the files on the
CD. However, once I remove the CD, any new CD (or the
same one) becomes 'unreadable'

Any suggestions are very welcome and appreciated.

Thanks

John, do you use Roxio EZ Cd Creator or Nero Burning Software? If you do
you may have to update those programs.

Hi all,

Common issue and bug within in XP. Some articles and workarounds:

This problem can occur if you are using Folder view in Windows Explorer. The
view may not be automatically refreshed in Folder view in Windows Explorer.

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

Manually refresh Windows Explorer by pressing F5 or by clicking Refresh on
the View menu in Windows Explorer. And/or Do not use Folder view in Windows
Explorer.

MS have produced an informal check program for Autoplay, which is
available through MVP Mike Kolitz's site -
Http://www.bigblackglasses.com/staff/downloads/autofix.exe

I suggest getting it and running it to ensure that settings are correct.
This sounds to me like the result of turning the auto-insert
notification of the drive right off, so Explorer never notices changes

Thanks everyone for your suggestions !!!

I will read up and try the various fixes.

I'll let you know if I get it solved.

Thanks again,
John

Hmmm. sounds like a job for the experts. see if jupiter jones on this
forum has addressed it. also go to the web and find Marfer's notes on Xp.
There are also links to Kelly's Korner, Doug Knox and

Very
smart people.

Just to report back on the suggestions you so kindly
provided.

None seemed to help with the problem.

I did find that if I booted with CDs in both drives I
could read the CD data fine. But if I removed then
replaced the CDs, then I could no longer see the files.

Any more suggestions - besides wiping the hard drive and
starting over?
