Files gone a.w.o.l. What happened?

Hi! :)

I was unpacking a bunch of .rar files when I realized that some of them have
files with the same name as files that had already been unpacked. Not good
since my rar unpacker is as basic as it gets and doesn't warn about
overwriting. When I went to start over, I found that the .rar's I had
already deleted were not in the recycle bin. I tried two file recovery
programs with no results. Is there a way to recover the missing files? What
might have caused this?

Thanx in advance :)

If the files were overwritten, as opposed to just deleted, then you
won't be able to recover the previous file with normal file recovery
tools. Unfortunately that seems to be the case here. A data recovery
service might be able to, but that is very expensive.
