Files disappear, deleted, Accessories emptied

Windows XP SP2
I am the only user.
I discovered that mspaint.exe had disappeared, then I had no fax dll files
(system32\fxs* gone), then the Start Menu's Accessories folder was empty.
I don't know what else has happened.

I've run McAfee VirusScan, Norton Antivirus, and NOD32. No viruses found.

I could have done something stupid with an anti-spyware program.

Has anyone seen files vanish like this?
Did you notice some anti-spyware program decide it disliked legitimate files?
Any thoughts on what could delete files with such seeming purpose?

Sounds like spyware/malware is a good possibility.
Virus software does not check for malware, and even a single anti-spyware
program doesn't get them all; you really need sort of an arsenal. Here's
what I use, and theyre free, plus there are others but be careful: unknowns
are often spyware themselves.

Download, update & run:
Adaware, lavasoft.com
Spybot Search & Destroy, spybot.com,
Windows Defender, miscrosoft.com

Winpatrol is another great application for realtime monitoring.
